Air Fryer Onion Bhajis

Air Fryer Onion Bhajis

Air Fryer Onion Bhajis are a healthier, crispy Indian snack made with thinly sliced onions, aromatic spices, and a chickpea flour batter. Air fried instead of deep fried, these golden fritters deliver authentic flavors and perfect crunch while reducing oil and calories, making them an ideal snack or appetizer for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup chickpea flour (besan)
  • 1/4 cup rice flour
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Water, as needed to form batter
  • Oil spray, for air frying

Instructions

  1. Prep the onions and mix the batter: Thinly slice the onions and place them in a large bowl. Add chickpea flour, rice flour, chopped green chilies, turmeric, cumin, coriander, chili powder, salt, and fresh cilantro. Gradually stir in water just enough to coat the onions and form a thick batter that binds well.
  2. Let the batter rest: Allow the mixture to rest for 10-15 minutes to let the flours absorb moisture, improving the texture and stickiness for even cooking in the air fryer.
  3. Preheat the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 360°F (182°C) for about 3-5 minutes to ensure even and quick cooking.
  4. Form the bhajis: Using a spoon or your hands, scoop small mounds of the batter and gently place them in the air fryer basket, leaving space between each bhaji for proper air circulation.
  5. Spray with oil and air fry: Lightly spray the bhajis with oil to aid in browning. Air fry at 360°F for 10-12 minutes, flipping them halfway through until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Serve hot: Remove the bhajis carefully once cooked and serve immediately for the best crunchy texture.

Notes

  • Slice onions thinly so they cook evenly and become soft inside.
  • Keep batter thick enough to hold together but not dry, resembling sticky dough.
  • Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket to ensure maximum crispiness.
  • Light oil spray is essential for achieving a golden, crispy finish.
  • Flip bhajis halfway through cooking for even color and texture.
