Baked Ham and Cheese Croissants

Baked Ham and Cheese Croissants are a quick and easy savory treat featuring flaky, buttery pastry filled with quality ham and melted cheese. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a snack, these croissants deliver warm, comforting flavors with a golden, crispy crust and are easily customizable to suit your preferences.

Ingredients

Scale

Croissant Dough

  • Store-bought or homemade croissant dough (quantity as per package or recipe)

Filling

  • Ham slices – enough to cover each dough piece (about 1 slice per croissant)
  • Cheese (Swiss, cheddar, or Gruyere) – enough to generously top each ham slice (about 1-2 oz per croissant)
  • Optional mustard – thin layer for spreading (about 1 tsp per croissant)
  • Optional fresh herbs (thyme or rosemary) – a pinch per croissant
  • Optional veggies (thin slices of bell pepper, spinach, or caramelized onions) – small amount per croissant

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg beaten with a splash of water

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Unroll or slice the croissant dough gently on a clean surface, preparing it for filling.
  2. Layer the Ham and Cheese: Place a slice of ham onto each piece of dough, then add a generous amount of cheese on top. If using mustard or herbs, spread or sprinkle them evenly over the filling at this stage for enhanced flavor.
  3. Roll and Seal: Carefully roll each croissant, making sure the filling stays inside. Pinch the edges firmly to seal completely, preventing any cheese from leaking during baking.
  4. Brush with Egg Wash: Lightly brush each rolled croissant with the beaten egg wash to create a shiny, golden crust that also locks in moisture while baking.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Place the croissants on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the dough is puffed, golden, and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Use cold croissant dough straight from the refrigerator to maintain flakiness and ease of handling.
  • Do not overfill croissants with ham or cheese to avoid bursting during baking.
  • Roll croissants evenly for consistent cooking and easier handling.
  • Let ham and cheese come to room temperature before assembling for better melting and flavor fusion.
  • Watch the baking time carefully; croissants can quickly go from golden to overly browned.
