Ingredients

Scale

Egg Base

  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • Herbs (e.g. parsley, chives), optional

Base

  • 4 cups bread cubes (day-old preferred) or 4 cups hash browns

Cheese

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, or mix

Protein

  • 1 cup cooked bacon, sausage, ham, or plant-based protein

Vegetables

  • 1 cup chopped onions
  • 1 cup chopped bell peppers
  • 1 cup chopped spinach or mushrooms

Optional Seasonings and Garnishes

  • Additional cheese for topping (optional)
  • Fresh herbs like parsley, basil, or chives

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Chop vegetables and cook protein as needed, such as browning sausage or crisping bacon. Tear or cube the bread and grate the cheese, getting everything ready for layering.
  2. Mix the Egg Base: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk or cream, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and any chosen herbs until smooth and slightly frothy. This mixture will bind and moisten the casserole.
  3. Layer Ingredients in the Baking Dish: Grease a casserole dish. Layer bread or hash browns on the bottom, followed by cooked meat, vegetables, and cheese. Pour the egg mixture evenly over all layers to soak the ingredients thoroughly.
  4. Bake Until Golden and Set: Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the eggs are fully set. Test doneness by inserting a knife in the center; it should come out clean.
  5. Let It Rest Before Serving: Allow the casserole to cool for 5-10 minutes to firm up, making it easier to slice and enhancing the flavors.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for better absorption without sogginess.
  • Do not overmix the egg base to maintain a nice layered texture.
  • Choose a deep casserole dish for even baking and perfect custard consistency.
  • Assemble the casserole the night before and refrigerate to let flavors meld.
  • Add additional cheese halfway through baking for a melty golden top.
