Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk, warmed slightly
  • 1 large egg, room temperature

Apple Cinnamon Filling

  • 2 cups fresh apples, finely chopped (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened (for spreading)

Topping

  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce, warmed for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Warm the milk slightly and dissolve the yeast with a pinch of sugar to activate it. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and softened butter. Add the yeast mixture and egg, then knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  2. Make the Apple Cinnamon Filling: While the dough rises, mix the finely chopped apples with cinnamon and brown sugar. Ensure the apples are chopped small so they soften well inside the rolls and create a gooey texture.
  3. Roll Out and Assemble: Once risen, roll the dough on a floured surface into a 12×16 inch rectangle. Spread softened butter evenly over the dough, then sprinkle the apple cinnamon filling on top. Carefully roll the dough tightly from one long edge to form a log.
  4. Slice and Bake: Cut the log into 12 equal slices and place them in a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise for an additional 30 minutes. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Drizzle with Caramel: Remove rolls from the oven and allow to cool for 5-10 minutes. Warm the caramel sauce slightly and pour liberally over the warm rolls. Serve immediately for best taste and gooey texture.

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients (egg, milk, butter) for better dough texture.
  • Don’t overfill with apple mixture to prevent soggy rolls.
  • Roll dough tightly to ensure neat spirals and keep filling inside while baking.
  • Warm caramel sauce slightly to make drizzling easier and enhance gooeyness.
  • Let rolls cool briefly before adding caramel so the sauce absorbs perfectly.
