Main Ingredients
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 store-bought or homemade pizza dough (enough for 4 calzones)
- 1/4 cup chopped onions
- 1/4 cup diced pickles
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for brushing)
- Prepare the Filling: Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat. Stir in chopped onions, ketchup, mustard, salt, and pepper to create the authentic cheeseburger flavor base. Remove from heat and mix in shredded cheddar cheese until melted.
- Roll Out the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into even circles about 6–7 inches in diameter, forming the base for each calzone pocket.
- Assemble the Calzones: Spoon a generous amount of the cheeseburger filling onto one half of each dough circle, leaving space around the edges. Top with diced pickles for crunch. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape and crimp edges tightly to seal.
- Bake Until Golden: Place calzones on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush each with olive oil for a golden crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (205°C) for 15–18 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
- Let Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly to prevent molten cheese burns. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.
Notes
- Don’t overfill to prevent bursting during baking.
- Seal edges properly by pinching or using a fork to avoid leaks.
- Use slightly chilled dough for easier handling and shaping.
- Precook all meat and vegetables fully for even heating and safety.
- Allow calzones to rest before cutting to set the cheese and avoid burns.
