Ingredients

Scale

Protein & Vegetables

  • 1 lb ground beef (lean or regular)
  • 4 large potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Dairy & Liquids

  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or softened cream cheese
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or cheese blend)

Seasonings

  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • Optional herbs: dried or fresh rosemary, thyme, or parsley

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Peel and slice the potatoes into thin, even rounds. Soak them in cold water for 10 minutes to remove excess starch and prevent sticking.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain excess fat. Add chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until onions are translucent and fragrant. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and herbs.
  3. Layer the Casserole: Grease a casserole dish. Layer half of the potato slices evenly on the bottom. Spread the cooked ground beef mixture over the potatoes. Top with the remaining potato slices. Pour beef broth evenly over the layers to keep moist during baking.
  4. Add Cheese and Creaminess: In a small bowl, mix sour cream or softened cream cheese with a pinch of salt and pepper. Spread or dollop this mixture evenly over the layered potatoes. Sprinkle shredded cheese generously on top.
  5. Bake Until Perfect: Cover the casserole with foil. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender and the cheese topping is golden and bubbly. Let rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for uniform potato slices to ensure even cooking.
  • Drain excess fat thoroughly after browning the beef to avoid a greasy texture.
  • Season potatoes and beef mixture separately for balanced flavor in every bite.
  • Bake covered first to steam potatoes, then uncovered to crisp the cheese topping.
  • Allow casserole to rest for 10 minutes before slicing to set properly.
