Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 ½ teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • 1 ¾ cups Granulated Sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter, softened
  • 4 large Eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 ¼ cups Milk
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract

Coloring and Frosting

  • Red Food Coloring (gel recommended)
  • Blue Food Coloring (gel recommended)
  • Whipped Cream or Buttercream Frosting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your cake pans thoroughly. In a medium bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate large bowl, cream the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract. Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients, mixing until the batter is smooth and well combined.
  2. Divide and Color the Batter: Divide the cake batter evenly into three separate bowls. Leave one bowl plain for the white layer. Add red food coloring to the second bowl and blue food coloring to the third. Stir gently but thoroughly to achieve vibrant, even colors without overmixing.
  3. Bake the Layers: Pour each colored batter into its own prepared cake pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove the pans from the oven and let the cake layers cool completely on wire racks before assembly.
  4. Assemble the Flag Cake: If needed, trim the tops of the cooled cakes to create flat, even layers. Place the white cake layer as the base on your serving plate and spread a thin layer of frosting over it. Cut the red cake layer into stripes and arrange these on top of the white base. Shape the blue cake layer into a rectangle and place it in one corner of the assembled cake to resemble the flag’s star field. Apply a crumb coat, then cover the entire cake smoothly with frosting, covering sides and top for a polished finish.
  5. Decorate and Serve: Decorate the blue section with white star-shaped sprinkles or pipe stars using leftover white frosting and a star piping tip to mimic the flag’s stars. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least one hour to set the frosting before slicing. Serve chilled or at room temperature, garnished as desired with additional festive sprinkles or fresh berries.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring to achieve vibrant colors without thinning the batter.
  • Make sure cake layers are completely cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Divide batter using a kitchen scale for uniformly thick layers.
  • Refrigerate the assembled cake before slicing for cleaner cuts.
  • Use room temperature eggs and butter to ensure a smooth batter and avoid curdling.
