Ingredients

Scale

Primary Ingredients

  • 1 can (14-15 oz) salmon, drained and flaked (or 1 ½ cups cooked fresh salmon, flaked)
  • ½ cup bread crumbs (or almond flour/gluten-free crackers for gluten-free option)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons mustard or mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley or dill, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 23 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salmon: Drain canned salmon thoroughly, removing excess liquid, and gently flake it with a fork to keep a chunky texture. For fresh cooked salmon, flake it into bite-sized pieces while maintaining moisture.
  2. Mix the Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flaked salmon, finely chopped onion, bread crumbs, beaten egg, chopped parsley, mustard or mayo, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until well incorporated, avoiding overmixing to maintain tenderness.
  3. Form the Patties: Shape the salmon mixture into evenly sized patties about 3 inches in diameter and ½ inch thick, using your hands or a scoop to ensure consistent size and thickness.
  4. Cook the Patties: Heat the oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties gently, cooking for 3-4 minutes on each side until they achieve a golden brown, crispy exterior. Avoid overcrowding for even cooking.
  5. Drain and Serve: Place cooked patties on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil, then serve immediately to enjoy the crispy texture.

Notes

  • Choose canned salmon with skin and bones if you want added flavor and calcium; remove bones for a smoother texture.
  • Adjust the amount of egg and bread crumbs to get a mixture that holds together without being too dry or wet.
  • Chill patties in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes before frying to help them hold their shape.
  • Cook over medium heat to get a crispy crust without burning and to cook the inside thoroughly.
  • Experiment with fresh herbs like parsley, dill, chives, basil, or tarragon for different flavor profiles.
