Lettuce Wrapped Burgers

Lettuce Wrapped Burgers offer a delicious, healthy, and low-carb alternative to traditional burgers by replacing buns with crisp lettuce leaves. Perfect for keto, paleo, and gluten-free diets, this recipe features juicy seasoned beef patties with fresh veggies and customizable toppings, providing a satisfying meal that’s quick to prepare and bursting with fresh flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Burger Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

For the Wraps and Toppings

  • 68 large Romaine or iceberg lettuce leaves
  • Optional: 4 cheese slices (cheddar, American, or your choice)
  • 46 tomato slices
  • 46 onion slices
  • Pickles, sliced, to taste
  • Mustard or your favorite sauce, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Lettuce Wraps: Gently rinse and thoroughly dry several large whole lettuce leaves that are sturdy enough to hold the burger and toppings without tearing, such as Romaine or iceberg lettuce.
  2. Season and Shape the Patties: In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt and black pepper just until combined to keep the patties tender. Shape the meat mixture into evenly sized patties slightly larger than your lettuce leaves, accounting for shrinkage during cooking.
  3. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach desired doneness. Near the end, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt slightly if using.
  4. Assemble the Burgers: Place each cooked patty on a lettuce leaf. Add tomato slices, onion slices, pickles, and your favorite sauce on top. Carefully wrap the lettuce around the fillings and secure with toothpicks if needed.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Arrange the assembled lettuce wrapped burgers on a plate and serve immediately to enjoy the fresh crunch paired with the juicy, warm patty.

Notes

  • Choose sturdy lettuce varieties like Romaine, iceberg, or butter lettuce to prevent tearing and sogginess.
  • Handle the ground beef gently when mixing to keep the patties tender, avoid overworking the meat.
  • Use a hot pan or grill to caramelize the patties and lock in juices.
  • Dry lettuce thoroughly before assembling to avoid soggy wraps.
  • Add sauces sparingly to maintain the crispness of the lettuce.
