Ingredients for Milk Toast

  • 4 slices soft white bread or favorite sandwich bread
  • 2 cups whole milk (full-fat for best creaminess)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Toast the Bread: Lightly toast the bread slices until they are golden on the outside but still soft inside to ensure they soak the milk well without becoming soggy quickly.
  2. Heat the Milk: In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, gently warm the milk. Stir in the butter, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Heat until the butter has melted and the mixture is fragrant but not boiling.
  3. Soak the Toast: Place the toasted bread slices in a shallow bowl and pour the warm milk mixture over them. Allow the bread to soak for 1 to 2 minutes until it absorbs the milk but still retains a slight bite.
  4. Serve Warm: Serve the Milk Toast immediately while warm and silky. Optionally, add your favorite toppings or garnishes just before enjoying.

Notes

  • Do not over-toast the bread; aim for a light golden crust with softness inside.
  • Warm the milk gently to preserve its flavor and texture—avoid boiling.
  • Use unsalted butter for better control over saltiness.
  • Add sugar gradually and adjust to taste for a mild sweetness.
  • Slightly stale bread works well as it soaks milk better without falling apart.
