Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground chuck (high-quality ground beef)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter (for caramelizing onions and buttering bread)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions: Slice the onions thinly. Cook them slowly in a skillet over low heat with a bit of butter for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become golden brown and caramelized, bringing out their natural sweetness.
  2. Shape and Season the Patties: Form the ground beef into thin, evenly sized patties. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper to enhance the flavor.
  3. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each patty for about 3 to 4 minutes per side until browned on the outside and cooked through but still juicy inside.
  4. Assemble the Patty Melt: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, a generous amount of caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the second slice of bread, butter side facing out.
  5. Grill the Sandwich: Place the assembled sandwiches on a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Grill slowly for 3 to 5 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese has melted. Press gently with a spatula while grilling to compact the layers.

Notes

  • Use medium heat when grilling to ensure the bread crisps perfectly without burning and the cheese melts evenly.
  • Don’t skip buttering the bread; it’s essential for the golden, crispy crust.
  • Thin patties cook quickly and fit well inside the sandwich, complementing other flavors.
  • Be patient with caramelizing onions; slow cooking enhances sweetness and flavor.
  • Press the sandwich gently during cooking to meld layers without squeezing out juices or cheese.
