Chocolate Layers
- 1 cup bittersweet chocolate chips (good quality)
- 1 cup white chocolate chips
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil or coconut oil (divided, for melting chocolates)
Peppermint Topping
- 3–4 peppermint candy canes, crushed finely
- Sea salt (optional, for sprinkling)
- Prepare Your Workspace: Line a baking sheet or shallow pan with parchment paper for easy removal. Measure and have all ingredients ready to streamline the process.
- Melt the Dark Chocolate: Using a double boiler or microwave-safe bowl, gently melt the bittersweet chocolate chips with half of the vegetable or coconut oil. Stir until smooth and glossy.
- Spread the Dark Chocolate Layer: Pour the melted dark chocolate onto the prepared pan and spread it evenly about 1/4 inch thick. Chill in the refrigerator until firm, around 20 minutes.
- Melt the White Chocolate: Repeat the melting process with the white chocolate chips, adding the remaining oil for shine and smoothness.
- Add the White Chocolate Layer and Peppermint: Pour the melted white chocolate over the chilled dark chocolate layer. Quickly sprinkle crushed peppermint candy canes evenly on top before it sets. Optionally, sprinkle a light pinch of sea salt.
- Chill Until Set: Return the pan to the refrigerator for about 30 minutes or until both layers are fully hardened.
- Break and Serve: Once firm, lift the parchment out and break the bark into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container or package beautifully for gifting.
Notes
- Temper your chocolate properly to avoid grainy texture and maintain shine.
- Use a small amount of vegetable or coconut oil to ensure smooth, spreadable chocolate layers.
- Crush candy canes by placing them in a sealed plastic bag and gently crushing with a rolling pin to prevent mess.
- Chill each chocolate layer fully before adding the next to maintain clear, distinct layers.
- Store Peppermint Bark in a cool, dry place to keep it from melting or softening.
